Abstract

Residual fuel oils containing oil-soluble magnesium compounds are prepared from vanadium containing crude oils by adding a minor proportion of metallic magnesium or magnesium oxide, hydroxide or carbonate, and distilling the crude oil. The oil-soluble compounds may react with the vanadium to form magnesium orthovanadate. Crude oil rich in naphthenic or phenolic constituents may be used. The residual oil is suitable for use in gas turbines. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of compounds of magnesium in general.
