Abstract

An aromatic extract, obtained by solvent extracting a naphthenic petroleum, is sulphonated and neutralized with alkali and the product mixed with a minor proportion of metal stearate, thus producing a cutting oil which can be emulsified with water. The metal stearate may be zinc, aluminium or lead stearate and the finished cutting oil may be in the form of a liquid or a paste. The cutting oil may contain additional ingredients such as tall oil, corrosion inhibitors, for example cyclohexylamine, and emulsion promoters, for example diethylene glycol, glycerine or other polyhydric alcohols. In examples, an aromatic extract, obtained by extracting a coastal distillate with phenol, is sulphonated and neutralized with sodium hydroxide and the product mixed with tall oil, diethylene glycol, cyclohexylamine and aluminium stearate. For comparison purposes, a similar composition is described in which candelilla wax replaces the aluminium stearate.
