Abstract

A crankcase conditioning oil comprises, by weight, 10-25 per cent of an oil-soluble metal petroleum sulphonate or naphthenate or a mixture of such salts, 20-50 per cent of an aromatic solvent naphtha and from 40-50 per cent of an aromatic extract obtained by solvent treatment of residual lubricating stocks of mineral oils. Metal salts specified are those of the alkali and alkaline-earth metals, particularly sodium and calcium. When a mixture of salts is used, the preferred proportions are 3 to 15 per cent of the sulphonate and 2 to 10 per cent of the naphthenate. From 10-50 per cent of the composition may be added to motor lubricating oil. A polyhydric alcohol, for example 0.1-5 per cent by weight of a glycol, and also corrosion inhibitors, antioxidants and extreme pressure agents may be added. An example describes a mixture of 11 per cent of sodium petroleum sulphonates, 1 per cent of diethylene glycol, 3 per cent of sodium naphthenates, 35 per cent of an aromatic solvent naphtha having a boiling range of 300-370 DEG F., 5 per cent of an extracted coastal mineral oil and 45 per cent of an aromatic extract obtained by solvent treatment of residual lubricating stocks of a naphthenic oil.
