Abstract

A liquid lubricating composition, particularly suitable for use in internal-combustion engines operating on fuels of high sulphur content, comprises a major proportion of lubricating oil, a minor proportion of magnesium carbonate and sufficient magnesium stearate to maintain the magnesium carbonate uniformly suspended in the oil. The lubricating oil may be mineral oil, or a synthetic oil such as a polymerized olefin or an ester (e.g. di-2-ethylhexyl sebacatate or azelate). The magnesium stearate may be the normal or basic salt. The composition may contain additional ingredients such as pour-point depressants, anti-rust agents, oiliness improvers, extreme pressure agents and viscosity index improvers. In the examples, mineral lubricating oil compositions are described containing magnesium carbonate and normal or basic magnesium stearate.
