Abstract

A flushing composition, which is suitable for removing undesirable deposits from internal combustion engines and which has lubricating properties, comprises a homogeneous mixture of isopropyl phenol lubricating oil, a water-soluble metallic soap and water. If desired, an impure commercial isopropyl phenol, consisting of a mixture of normal- and iso-propyl phenols with smaller amounts of phenol, ethyl phenols, normal- and iso-butyl phenols, and higher-boiling phenols, may be employed. The lubricating oil may be a minera oil or synthetic oil or a blend of oils, while the metallic soap may be a sodium of potassium soap of oleic, palmitic, linolenic, capric or linoleic acid or mixtures thereof. The composition may also contain emulsifying agents, oiliness and extreme pressure agents, viscosity index improvers, pour point depressants, foam inhibitors, and corrosion and oxidation inhibitors. Suitable emulsifying agents are sorbitan monooleate, di-ortri-ethanolamine, higher alkanolamines, and diethylene glycol and esters thereof. Suitable corrosion inhibitors are dibenzyl disulphide, alkyl phenyl sulphides, alkyl or alkaryl phosphites, sulphurized terpenes and sulphurized diisobutylene. In the examples, flushing compositions are described consisting of commercial isopropyl phenol, mineral lubricating oil, potash cottonseed oil soap, water, and sulphurized diisobutylene, with or without triethanolamine.
