Abstract

A lubricant for metals consists of a mixture of a molybdic xanthate of an alkanol containing less than 6 carbon atoms and a mineral lubricating oil. In use, the xanthate is decomposed by the frictional heat and molybdenum sulphide is deposited on the metal surface. A preformed coating of molybdenum sulphide may be produced on metal parts to be subjected to friction by heating the metal parts in a mineral oil solution containing 0.5-10 per cent by weight of the above-mentioned xanthate at a temperature above the decomposition temperature of the xanthate. The metal parts, thus coated, may be lubricated by means of a mineral lubricating oil containing 0.5-6 per cent of the above-mentioned xanthate or of molybdenum blue, or by means of a mixture of 0.5-6 per cent of a thiomolybdate of a nitrogenous base (viz., an alkylamine, an alkenylamine, a quaternated heterocyclic base or an aromatic amine) with a glycol, a polyethylene glycol, a polypropylene glycol, a vegetable or animal oil, fatty acid esters admixed with primary alcohols, fatty acid esters of mono- or poly-hydric alcohols or monohydric alcohol esters of dicarboxylic acids. In an example, a lubricating composition consists of mineral lubricating oil and molybdic n-butyl xanthate. For comparison purposes, a similar lubricating composition is described in which the xanthate is molybdic n-dodecyl xanthate. Specifications 765,507 and 773,820 are referred to.
