Abstract

Lubricant gel compositions comprise a lubricating oil containing fine particles of a coated zinc oxide in sufficient amount to exert a gelling effect, the zinc oxide particles having a specific surface area of more than 12 m.2/gm. and the coating comprising at least one organic carboxylic acid, having at least 8 carbon atoms, attached to or combined with the surface of the particles so that the hydrocarbon residue is directed away from the surface. Suitable oils are mineral oils, silicone oils, e.g. methyl silicone, or diester oils, e.g. di-(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate. Typical coating acids are caproic and 12-hydroxy stearic. The coated ZnO may exert all of the gelling effect, or there may be minor amounts of other gelling agents present, e.g. a previously prepared soap grease. The gels are prepared by dissolving or dispersing the acid in the oil, and heating and milling ZnO in the resulting solution or dispersion.ALSO:Lubricant gel compositions comprise a silicone lubricating oil, e.g. methyl silicone, containing fine particles of a coated zinc oxide in sufficient amount to exert a gelling effect, the ZnO particles having a specific surface area of more than 12 m2/gm. and the coating comprising at least one organic carboxylic acid, having at least 8 carbon atoms, attached to or combined with the surface of the particles so that the hydrocarbon residue is directed away from the surface. Typical coating acids are caproic and 12-hydroxy stearic. The coated ZnO may exert all of the gelling effect, or there may be minor amounts of other gelling agents present, e.g. a previously prepared soap grease.
