Abstract

A composition suitable as a pipe thread lubricant comprises a lubricating oil, a minor proportion of a complex of a metal soap of a C8-C30 carboxylic acid and a metal salt of a C1-C6 aliphatic carboxylic acid, a minor proportion of graphite and a minor proportion of one or more powdered metals. The lubricating oil may be mineral or synthetic, while synthetic oils mentioned are those of the synthetic hydrocarbon, hydrocarbon polymer, ester, complex ester, formal, mercaptol, polyalkylene oxide, and silicone types, and specifically di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate and di-C8-oxo azelate. The C1-C6 aliphatic carboxylic acid may be formic, acetic, propionic, acrylic, adipic or lactic acid. The powdered metal may be zinc dust and/or lead powder. The composition may also contain oxidation inhibitors (e.g. phenyl-alpha-naphthylamine), dyes, metal deactivators, corrosion preventives or deodorants. In an example, a lubricating grease is prepared from mineral lubricating oil, hydrated lime, coconut fatty acids, acetic acid, graphite, zinc dust, lead powder and phenyl alphanaphthylamine.
