Abstract

A stable lubricating grease comprises a lubricant base and a mixture of lithium soap of one or more hydroxystearic or polyhydroxy stearic acids and sodium soap with or without other lithium soap, the hydroxyl content of the soap mixture lying between 3.2 and 4.0 per cent by weight. The hydroxystearic acid may be 12-hydroxystearic acid, while other acids whose soaps may be present in the grease are stearic, palmitic, oleic, lauric and myristic acids. The grease may include other usual ingredients such as oxidation inhibitors, particularly phenylene diamine or phenyl-b -naphthylamine, and corrosion inhibitors. In the examples, lubricating greases are described consisting of mineral oil, lithium hydroxystearate, prepared from hydrogenated castor oil fatty acid by neutralization with lithium hydroxide, lithium stearate and sodium hydroxystearate.
