Abstract

A lubricating oil composition comprises a major proportion of a lubricating oil and minor proportions of (a) an oil-soluble aliphatic acid containing more than one CXXH group (where X is oxygen or sulphur) or an amide or a partial ester thereof; (b) an oil-soluble compound containing a YH group (where Y is oxygen, sulphur, selenium or tellurium) attached to the aromatic ring but containing no CYYH group, and (c) a compound containing an aromatic ring and a CYYH group but free from nitrile, nitro, nitroso and hydroxy groups. Additive (a) may be malonic, succinic, glutaric, adipic, pimelic, sebacic, azelaic, tartaric, citric, maleic and citraconic acids substituted by alkyl or alkenyl groups, examples of such acids and of amides and esters thereof being given, or alkenyl thio succinic or alkenyl thio tartaric acids. Additive (b) may be an alkyl phenol or naphthyl or a S, Se or Te analogue thereof; they may be obtained by alkylating phenols or may be natural products such as are obtained from petroleum hydrocarbons or coal tars. The additive may contain one or more alkyl groups and also other substituents, such as halogen atoms and alkoxy, alkylamino and nitro groups. Examples of suitable additives are given. Additive (c) may contain one or more CYYH groups, which may be attached to the aromatic ring either directly or through a side chain; acids referred to are benzoic, phthalic, toluic and xylic acids, phenyl substituted fatty acids, and cinnamic, benzoyl propionic, phenyl laevulinic, phenyl alkyl succinic, benzyl alkyl succinic, phenyl alkyl glutaric, o-vinyl benzoic, phenyl angelic, naphthoic, naphthyl stearic, anthranilic, mercapto phenyl, tolyl, xylyl, xenyl, naphthyl or anthracyl fatty acids, ethyl mercapto phenyl acetic and alkyl mercapto benzene-4-carboxylic acids. Lubricating oils specified are natural or synthetic oils, for example mineral oils, olefin polymers, silicone fluids and organic phosphates.
