Abstract

A lubricating grease composition comprises a lubricating oil base gelled to a grease consistency with a mixture of an indanthrene compound and 2,5-20% by weight, based on the total grease, of a diaryl amine of formula Ar2NH wherein Ar is either an unsubstituted or alkylated phenyl, or naphthyl radical. Specified diaryl amines are phenyl a -naphthylamine, phenyl b -naphthylamine, diphenylamine, di(a -naphthyl)amine, di(b -naphthyl)amine, (a -naphthyl) (b -naphthyl)amine, di(tert-butylphenyl)amine, (sec-amylphenyl) phenyl amine, (methyl phenyl) naphthylamine. The amine may be incorporated in the composition by homogenizing it with a mixture of lubricating oil and indanthrene compound. Alternatively the amine may be incorporated with the indanthrene compound before mixing with the lubricating oil or may be dispersed in the lubricating oil prior to addition of the indanthrene compound. Preferably the compositions contain 5-35% of indanthrene compound examples of the latter including flavanthrene, pyranthrene, violanthrene, 3:31 dichloroindanthrene 3-diloroindanthrene and indanthrene itself. The lubricating oil may be of mineral or synthetic origin, the latter including esters of mono and di basic acids, e.g. C8, Oxo alcohol ester of C8 Oxo acid and di-ethyl hexyl sebacate esters of glycols, complex esters, diaryl dialkyl silanes, esters of phosphoric acid, halohydrocarbon oils, e.g. chlorotin fluoroethylene, polysiloxanes, chlorophenyl silicones, sulphite and carbonate esters, formals, mercaptals, polyglycols, and polyphenyl ethers. Comparative examples are given.
