Abstract

A rust-preventive composition comprises a major proportion of a white spirit solvent, a minor proportion of an alkali or alkaline-earth metal petroleum mahogany sulphonate, a minor proportion of a protective fatty or oily material and a minor proportion of a cyclohexanol substituted with a C1-C6 alkyl group. The solvent is preferably present in an amount of 50-85% by weight of the composition and the alcohol may be used in amounts of 1-10%. The sulphonates are added in amounts of 1-10% by weight of the composition generally as soap concentrates in mineral oil. The fatty or oily material is preferably lanoline, wool fat, bitumens, heavy hydrocarbon oils, animal fats, pentaerythritol mono- or di-oleate, glyceryl mono- or di-oleate or cetyl or stearyl alcohol. Hardened lanoline such as the magnesium, calcium or barium salts may be used also lanoline neutralized with caustic soda or potash. Amounts of 1-30% by weight of the composition are used. 1-10% of petrolatum may also be added. Optional additives are 1-5% by weight of an alkanolamine such as mono-, di- or tri-ethanolamine, trimethanolamine, ethanolpropanolamine or diethylethanolamine as a finger-print remover; 0.1-2% by weight of an alkali metal benzoate as a ferrous metal anti-corrosive agent and when lanoline or wool fat is the protective material 1-10% by weight of petrolatum and up to 10% by weight of a spindle oil.
