Abstract

A soluble metal-working oil composition comprises mineral lubricating oil containing minor proportions of a sulphurized fatty oil, an oil-soluble metal naphthenate and/or a metal salt of petroleum sulphonic acid, and a partial fatty acid ester of sorbitan or the polyoxyethylene derivative thereof, in which the fatty acid radical contains 12-22 carbon atoms. The polyoxyethylene radical contains 2-20 oxyethylene groups. Partial esters specified are the mono-, di-, and tri-oleates and stearates of sorbitan and the polyoxyethylene tri-oleates and tri-stearates of sorbitan. Sodium naphthenate and sodium or calcium petroleum sulphonate are specified. The sulphurized fatty oil may contain 6-20 per cent. weight of sulphur and sulphurized sperm oil is referred to. Optional ingredients mentioned are pure oil and alcohols such as isopropanol and ethylene glycol; small amounts of water and free acid may also be present.
