Abstract

A lubricating composition of low gumforming tendency consists of a mixture of castor oil and at least one aliphatic or cyclo-aliphatic alcohol ester of an organic dicarboxylic acid having the formula <FORM:0750402/III/1> where n is 2 to 8, R1 and R2 are identical and are branched-chain alkyl radicals or alkyl - substituted cycloalkyl radicals having at least 5 carbon atoms. The castor oil content of the mixture may be between 10 per cent and 90 percent. A mineral oil may be added in a smaller proportion than the castor oil. The ester is preferably derived from 2-ethyl n-hexyl, 3:5:5 trimethylhexyl or capryl (1-methyl n-heptyl) alcohols, a mixture of branched-chain C7 to C9 alcohols known as "Alphanol 79," methyl cyclohexanol or dimethyl cyclohexanol. The ester is preferably di (methyl cyclohexyl) adipate, di (Alphanol 79) adipate, di (2-ethyl hexyl) azelate, di (2-ethyl hexyl) sebacate, di (3:5:5-trimethyl hexyl) sebacate, dicapryl sebacate or di (Alphanol 79) sebacate. The composition may comprise additives to retard oxidation and gum formation, e.g. as disclosed in Specification 713,423; anti-corrosion additives such as the triaryl phosphates disclosed in Specification 574,445; and auxiliary additives such as the reaction products of aldehydes or ketones with basic water-soluble primary or secondary amines, as disclosed in Specification 588,864. Other additives are detergents and antioxidants operative at high temperature, e.g. detergents such as calcium petroleum sulphonate or basic barium petroleum sulphonate, or antioxidants such as oil-soluble metal salts of organic dithiophosphoric acids or metal derivatives of alkylated phenol thioethers or disulphides.
