Abstract

1484736 Oil-in-water emulsion lubricating composition EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 23 Dec 1975 [31 Dec 1974] 56142/74 Heading C5F A lubricant, suitable for use with pneumatic tools, comprises an oil-in-water emulsion containing (a) 1-10 wt. per cent lubricating oil, (b) 3-35 wt. per cent oil-soluble lubricant additives; (c) at least 10 wt. per cent water and (d) 20-50 wt. per cent of at least one watersoluble compound capable of lowering the freezing point of the composition and selected from alcohols, alkanolamines, glycols and higher polyhydric alcohols, and glycol ethers, said components (a) to (d) together forming substantially 100% of the composition. The oil (a) is preferably a mineral oil but may also be an animal or vegetable oil, or synthetic oil. The oil-soluble lubricant additives may include emidsifiers such as alkylaryl polyglycol ethers and/or sodium alkylbenzene sulphonate, bactericides such as 1,3,5-trialkyl hexahydro-striazine, extreme pressure agents such as phosphate esters, chlorinated wax, sulphurized olefins or sulphurized sperm oil, anticorrosive additives such as fatty acid alkanolamines or fatty acid amides, anti-stick-slip agents such as a C 6 -C 24 saturated or unsaturated acid and a solubilizing agent such as 2-butoxy-ethanol. The water-soluble compound (d) is preferably diethylene glycol, ethylene glycol, glycerol or a mixture of glycerol and ethanolamine. A water-soluble bactericide such as 1,2-benzisothiazolone or 6-acetoxy-2,4-dialkyl-m-dioxane is preferably also present.
