Abstract
Highly basic polyvalent metal salts of carboxylic acids, which salts are suitable as additives for lubricating oils and fuel oils, especially hydrocarbon oils, and may be used in the preparation of emulsions of water and oil, are made by gradually adding an alkali metal hydroxide, dissolved in water or in an aliphatic alcohol of 1-3 carbon atoms or in a mixture of such alcohol and water, to a solution of a carboxylic acid or a salt thereof and an inorganic polyvalent metal salt in a solvent which consists to the extent of at least 25 per cent by weight of an aliphatic alcohol of 1-3 carbon atoms. If the carboxylic acid is in the form of a polyvalent metal salt, the metal should be the same as that in the inorganic salt, and such organic acid polyvalent metal salts may be prepared by adding excess inorganic salt to the solution of the organic acid or an alkali metal, ammonium, or organic base salt thereof. Alkyl-substituted benzoic and salicylic acids, and naphthenic acids are specified as carboxylic acids. In examples: (1) sodium o-sec.-cetyl salicylate, together with calcium chloride, is dissolved in a mixture of isopropanol, ethanol and benzene, and then potassium hydroxide, dissolved in the same liquid mixture, is added; (2) a mixture of sodium alkyl salicylates, sodium alkyl phenolates, alkyl phenols, and and alkene polymers (this mixture being prepared by a process involving alkylation, the alkylating agent being a mixture of C14-C18 alkenes is dissolved, together with calcium chloride in a mixture of isopropanol and benzene, and a solution of potassium hydroxide in an isopropanol-ethanol-benzene mixture is added; (3) sodium sec.-cetyl benzoate is treated as under (2). Zinc salts are also referred to.ALSO:Highly basic polyvalent metal salts of carboxylic acids are made by gradually adding an alkali metal hydroxide, dissolved in water or in an aliphatic alcohol of 1-3 carbon atoms or in a mixture of such alcohol and water, to a solution of a carboxylic acid or a salt thereof and an inorganic polyvalent metal salt in a solvent which consists to the extent of at least 25 per cent by weight of an aliphatic alcohol of 1-3 carbon atoms. Alkyl-substituted benzoic and salicylic acids and naphthenic acids are specified as carboxylic acids. The basic salts which separate from the reaction product may be filtered or centrifuged off or the solvent may be removed by distillation, and the residue may be extracted with a light hydrocarbon oil. The alcohol used as solvent may be mixed with light hydrocarbon oils. The products are additives for lubricating oils or fuel oils. In examples: (1) sodium o-sec.-salicylate, together with calcium chloride, is dissolved in a mixture of isopropanol, ethanol and benzene, and then potassium hydroxide, dissolved in the same liquid mixture, is added; (2) a mixture of sodium alkyl salicylates, sodium alkyl phenolates, alkyl phenols, and alkene polymers (prepared using an alkene mixture the components of which have 14-18 carbon atoms as alkylating agent) is dissolved, together with calcium chloride in a mixture of isopropanol and benzene, and a solution of potassium hydroxide in an isopropanol-ethanol-benzene mixture is added; (3) sodium sec.-cetyl benzoate is treated as under (2). Zinc salts are also referred to. Specification 739,434 is referred to.
