Abstract

Materials suitable for addition to lubricating oils (see Group III) are (a) sulphurized esters of tall oil acids in which the hydrogen of the carboxyl groups has been replaced by C1-C5 straight-chain alkyl groups and (b) the reaction product of phosphorus sesquisulphide with a substance chosen from glyceryl trioleate, ethylene-, propylene- and butylene-glycol dioleates and lard oil which has been refined by solvent extraction with propane. In the examples, (a) methyl esters of tall oil acids are heated with sulphur and (b) glyceryl trioleate is heated with phosphorus sesquisulphide.ALSO:A composition, suitable for addition to lubricating oils to produce an extreme pressure lubricant, comprises (a) sulphurized esters of tall oil acids in which the hydrogen of the carboxyl groups has been replaced by C1-C5 straight-chain alkyl groups and (b) the reaction product of phosphorus sesquisulphide with a substance chosen from glyceryl trioleate, ethylene-, propylene- and butylene-glycol dioleates and lard oil which has been refined by solvent extraction with propane. An organic polysulphide such as dibenzyl disulphide, and a viscosity index improver and pour point depressant such as the polymerized esters of methacrylic acid known under the trade name "Acryloid", may be added to the composition. The composition may be blended with mineral lubricating oil.
