Abstract
A vanadium-containing residual fuel oil has dissolved therein a complex calcium borium or magnesium soap of an acid having 1 to 5 carbon atoms in the molecule and an acid having 16 to 22 carbon atoms in the molecule. The lower molecular weight acid may be acetic, formic, proprionic, crotonic or acrylic acid, and the higher molecular weight acid may be stearic acid, oleic acid or hydrogenated fish oil acids. The complex is added to the residual oil in amounts to give 0.02 to 0.5 weight per cent of calcium, borium or magnesium metal based on the residual oil, or in an amount sufficient to secure an atomic ratio of calcium, borium or magnesium to vanadium in the oil of 1/1 to 5/1 . The complex soap may comprise 10 to 80 per cent by weight of the lower molecular weight acid, and 90 to 20 per cent by weight of the higher molecular weight acid. The complex soaps preferably formed in the presence of a mineral oil, which may be some of the residual oil, to form a composition which is then added to the residual oil to obtain the fuel composition. In an example a complex soap is formed from acetic and stearic or hydrogenated fish oil acids, with calcium hydroxide, in mineral oil, and added to a residual fuel oil.
