Abstract

509,976. Lubricating-greases. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. Nov. 7, 1938, No. 32260. Convention date, Nov. 22, 1937. [Class 91] Consistent lubricating-greases are prepared by mixing mineral oil with soda soaps of hardened fatty acids or fatty acids naturally saturated by hydrogen having at least one free hydroxyl group and preferably 18 or more carbon atoms in the molecule. The acids are hardened by saturation with hydrogen. Soda soaps of fatty acid mixtures separated off from hardened castor oil, preferably freed from polyhydric alcohols and with an iodine number of less than 5, are preferred. In an example, 750 gms. of fatty acids separated off from hardened castor oil and having an iodine number of 4 are dissolved in 2 kgs. of mineral oil of Engler viscosity 7 at 50‹C. About 180 gms. of sodium hydroxide solution of 50 per cent. concentration are added and the whole heated till practically all the water is driven off. Mineral oil, 2,250 kgs., is then added and the whole heated to 200‹C. The liquid mass is poured on to a metal plate and homogenized by rolling, after cooling. The grease is transparent and stable to storage and heat.
