Abstract

Lubricants for use as penetrating oils, for softening rust, for power transmission and for use at low temperatures comprise a lubricating oil, an hydroxy-derivative of cholanic acid, e.g. sodium tauro-glycocholate (bile salts), and a solvent for the latter which is compatible with the lubricating oil. The solvent may be an ester of an hydroxy-acid, e.g. amyl lactate or a higher lactate; or a neutral ester, e.g. amyl acetate, glycerol palmitate, oleate, or stearate; ethyl or buty lactates do not form stable mixtures. There may also be present graphite, preferably in the colloidal state, kerosene, or both. In examples: (1) a solution of bile salts in amyl lactate is added to a mixture of lubricating oils; (2) the same solution is added to nonheavy gear oil; (3) a lubricant consists of lubricating oil, kerosene, amyl acetate, a solution of bile salts in alcohol, and a graphite suspension.
