Abstract

A lubricant having an improved load-bearing capacity consists of a soluble cutting oil (i.e. a mineral hydrocarbon oil, with or without the addition of animal and vegetable oils, to which has been added a substance rendering the oil self-peptizing in ordinary neutral water to give a stable oil-in-water emulsion) containing 0,5 to 4 per cent of sulphur in loosely chemically combined form. For use in hard water there may be added sodium-, sodiumsulphonated-, or potash-rosin or -rosin-oil soaps, or alcohols, e.g. methanol or diethylene glycol. In examples: (1) a paraffin oil, an "emulsifying base" and a "sulphurized base" are agitated while warmed; the "emulsifying base" may be a sulphonated mineral oil together with sodium oleate and rosinate and some free oleic acid, or sodium mahogany sulphonates, and it may include sodium salts of fatty acids, e.g. oleic; the "sulphurized base" may be obtained by heating and agitating flowers of sulphur with (a) animal, fish, vegetable or other oils, e.g. whale, soya bean, hydrocarbon oils, (b) fatty acids, e.g. oleic, stearic, or (c) terpenes; (2) an "emulsifying base" as in example (1) is mixed with a sulphurized light paraffin oil.
