Abstract
Mineral lubricating-oils or fractions thereof are freed from naphthenic acids by contacting the oil vapours at a temperature above 300 DEG C. with a catalyst of high porosity and selected from the following, lithium hydroxide, carbonate, or phosphate; sodium hydroxide or carbonate; potassium carbonate; beryllium oxide or carbonate; magnesite, magnesium hydroxide or carbonate; calcium oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate; strontium carbonate; barium oxide or carbonate; aluminium oxide or hydroxide; chromium sesquioxide; manganous oxide, or carbonate; iron; ferrous oxide or carbonate; ferric oxide or hydroxide; cobaltous oxide or carbonate; nickel oxide or carbonate; zinc, zinc oxide or carbonate; silica; titanium dioxide; zirconium oxide; stannic oxide; thorium oxide; cerium dioxide; uranium trioxide; bismuth trioxide. The process destroys the carboxylic group, or converts it into a non-acidic group. The compounds may be prepared in the highly porous form by (1) calcining the salts of carboxylic acids; (2) briquetting the metal compound with a substance subsequently removed by heating for example, naphthalene, and ammonium carbonate; (3) suspending the metal compound on a carrier such as asbestos or silica, for example highly porous soda lime is obtained by burning lime slaked with caustic soda. Small amounts of activators may be added. The oil vapours may be mixed with steam or other inert gas, and low pressures may be used. In an example, a crude lubricating oil distillate containing naphthenic acids, is vaporized and is passed with steam over granulated lithium carbonate at 400 DEG C. The resulting oil vapours are condensed to yield an oil of the same boiling range as the original oil and of negligible acid value.
