Abstract

517,858. Abrasive alumina. CHEMICAL CONSTRUCTION CORPORATION. Sept. 16, 1938, No. 27122. Convention date, Sept. 22; 1937. Drawings to Specification. [Class 1 (iii)] Abrasive alumina is obtained by fusing, with or without a flux such as metallic iron, and with or without an added reducing agent such as coke, bauxite containing impregnated therein a finely divided reducing agent. The fusion temperature is thereby lowered to 1600-1800‹C. The impregnated bauxite may be obtained by impregnation, e.g., of bauxite fines, with a .liquid carbonaceous material such as a vegetable, animal, marine, or mineral oil, or acid sludges resulting from the sulphuric acid refining of mineral oils, and calcining the impregnated bauxite at or below red heat. Alternatively, spent bauxite from the adsorption purification of oils may provide the initial material, a flow sheet for this aspect of the process being included in the Specification.
