Abstract
A cutting oil comprises 25-95 per cent. by volume of petroleum distillate, 5-75 per cent. by volume of naphthenic acid and from 0.5 to about 5 per cent. by weight of metal naphthenate. The metal naphthenate is dissolved or colloidally dispersed in the oil and is a naphthenate of magnesium, calcium, aluminium, lead, manganese, copper, iron, cobalt or nickel or a mixture of two or more such naphthenates. The petroleum distillate may be lubricating oil, gas oil, kerosene or kerosene distillate. Both the petroleum distillate and the naphthenic acid may be employed in the crude form or each may be separately refined by treatment with sulphuric acid and removal of sludge. Alternatively the crude petroleum distillate and the naphthenic acid may be mixed together and the mixture refined with sulphuric acid. Sulphuric acid refining may be followed by treatment with caustic soda solution to neutralise any free sulphuric acid or sulphur dioxide. If desired the metal naphthenate may be formed in the mixture of petroleum distillate and naphthenic acid by contact of such mixture with an oxide, silicate or other reactive compound of the desired metal. Suitably this reactive metal compound is one, such as hydrated magnesium silicate, which is capable of acting as a filter aid and also as an adsorbent material for decolorizing the mixture.
