579,741. Pyrophoric incendiary compositions. CAWLEY, 'C. M., CARLILE, J. H. G., and WALLS, L. P. Sept. 16, 1942, No. 13062. [Class 9 (ii)] An incendiary powder comprises a small proportion of yellow phosphorus thoroughly distributed in a combustible powder,-the temperature of inflammation of which is below the temperature developed as a result of the oxidation of the phosphorus on exposure to the air. The phosphorus thus serves as an igniter for the combustible powder. The combustible substance may be magnesium or thermite. The powder may contain a diluent such as magnesia, starch, boric acid or pulverized coal. The phosphorus may be present in the form of a deposit on the combustible powder or on the diluent; such a deposit may be obtained by suspending the powder or diluent in a carbon disulphide solution of phosphorus and evaporating the solvent in the absence of air ; by allowing some solvent to remain, a delay of, say, 2 minutes occurs between exposure to air and inflammation. When the deposit is made on the diluent, the igniter thus made may be safely stored and handled and mixed with the combustible powder immediately before use.
