Abstract

1445382 Liquid fuel composition PEROLIN CO Inc 26 July 1973 [17 Aug 1972] 09566/76 Divided out of 1445381 Heading C5G A liquid fossil fuel composition comprises a major proportion by weight of fossil fuel (e.g. fuel oil) and blended therewith compounds of silicon and compounds of magnesium which respectively form SiO 2 and MgO at fuel combustion temperature in a weight ratio SiO 2 : MgO of greater than 2 : 1. In one aspect the fuel is suitable for a gas turbine and contains at least one of the contaminants vanadium and alkali metal, the quantity of the above compounds being such as to provide at least 2 parts by weight of Mg to each part by weight of V and at least 2 parts by weight Si to each part by weight of alkali metal in the fuel and in the air combining therewith on combustion. In another aspect the fuel composition is suitable for use in gas turbines operating in a marine or similar environment subject to the ingestion of sea salts in the combustion air, the quantity of Si present being at least 2 parts by weight for each part by weight of alkali metal in the combustion products to the turbine and to provide at least 2- parts by wt. of Mg to each part by weight of any V in the fuel. The Si compounds and Mg compounds may be added to the fossil fuel in the form of aqueous suspensions or solutions, or organic suspensions or solutions. Organic solvents or suspension media include kerosene, fuel oil, methylated naphthalenes, derivatives thereof, and orthodichlorobenzene. The magnesium compound may be magnesium acetate, magnesium chloride, magnesium sulphonate, magnesium naphthenate, magnesium oleate or magnesium octoate and the silicon compound a lower alkyl silicate or other organic silicon compound (e.g. a silicone polymer).
