Abstract

During the combustion of carbonaceous fuels at temperatures above 1800 DEG C in the presence of an at least stoichiometric quantity of air, major quantities of nitrogen oxides are formed. In order largely to avoid the formation of nitrogen oxides, the combustion is carried out in two stages, as follows: in the first stage (612), thermal combustion of a carbonaceous fuel (620) is carried out with a less than stoichiometric quantity of air (652). The exit gas from the first phase (612) is mixed with additional air (662) to form a mixture whose adiabatic flame temperature is above the auto-ignition temperature of the mixture. This mixture is burned in the presence of a catalyst (634) at a temperature above the auto-ignition temperature but below a temperature which would lead to a noticeable formation of nitrogen oxides. <IMAGE>
