Abstract

Catalytically promoted thermal combustion of a carbonaceous fuel, is carried out by (a) forming an intimate mixt. of fuel and air and bringing at least part of this into contact with a solid oxidn. catalyst and (b) burning at least a fraction of the fuel under substantially adiabatic conditions so as to form an effluent of high thermal energy, the combustion being such that the air/fuel mixt. has an adiabatic flame temp. such that on contact with the catalyst, the operating temp. of this is above the instantaneous auto-ignition of the air/fuel mixt. but below a temp. which would lead to significant formation of oxides of N. Pref. either a residual fraction of the fuel or a partially burnt effluent from (b) is burnt thermally.
