Abstract
PURPOSE:To make possible sufficient venting and improve the yield of castings by opening the cavity in a mold to the atmosphere through a porous plug and exhausting and removing the gas of the casting into the atmosphere through said plug. CONSTITUTION:A cavity 2 of the shape conforming to the product is formed in a green sand mold pattern 1 and the cavity 2 opens to the atmosphere through the opening 3 formed in the mold 1 and is held covered with the porous plug 4 bound with relatively coarse particles. The porous plug 4 is composed of the porous refractories (ceramics) which allow the passage of gas but do not allow the passage of molten metal 5. When the molten metal 5 is poured into the cavity 4, the gas evolved in the mold 1 partly passes through the mold 1 and is removed, but the greater portion of the gas passes through the porous plug 4 and is exhausted and removed into the air through the opening 3. At this time, the flow of the molten metal 5 into the opening 3 does not occur.
