Abstract

1337706 Metal casting refractory cores PRECISION METALSMITHS Inc 15 Feb 1972 [22 Feb 1971] 6954/72 Heading C1J A refractory core is impregnated with a melt of at least one organic selected from non-cyclic OH compounds or cyclic compounds, having M.Pt. of at least 170‹ F., density of at least 1 gm./ml., can be melted to a liquid and resolidified on cooling, and can be volatilized on heating above the M.Pt.; then incorporated into a mould; heated to volatilize and remove the impregnant whereafter molten metal is cast into the mould. Refractories specified are SiO 2 , ZrSiO 4 , ZrO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , CaZrO 4 and Al silicates, whilst the organics include inter alia acids (e.g. azelaic, malonic) alcohols (e.g. mannitol) for the non-cyclics and, for the cyclics, alcohols, phenols, ketones, imides, amides, keto amides, anhydrides, aldehydes, hydrocarbons and nitrocompounds, examples being given.
