Abstract

1,157,218. Continuous casting-machines. SOUTHWIRE CO. 28 Feb., 1967 [19 April, 1966], No. 9366/67. Heading B3F. In the continuous casting of a bar 30, e.g. of copper, in a machine having a casting wheel 11 with a peripheral groove 18 and a continuous belt 17, the wheel 11 and the belt 17 are made from steel, e.g. a low carbon steel, to give a low rate of heat transfer and a low rate of temperature transfer and also increased structural strength. When the molten metal 21 is poured the temperature of the mould forming groove 18 increases to substantially the temperature of the poured metal and heat is retained temporarily in the groove 18 adjacent the pouring point because of the low rate of heat transfer and prevents chilling of the molten metal and premature shrinkage of a peripheral skin of the cast bar. The low rate of temperature transfer allows the gradual passing of heat from the molten metal to a coolant circulating in channels in the wheel 11, and the controlled cooling ensures improved metallic structure of the solidified bar 30. The controlled cooling is said to reduce thermal and fatigue stresses in the cyclic heating and cooling of the wheel 11. The belt 17 is also cooled by sprays 27 and the groove 18 is cooled as it moves from point d-d towards point a-a by the circulating coolant in the channels.
