Abstract
1,109,298. Moulds. SCHLOEMANN A.G. 25 June, 1965 [17 July, 1964], No. 26976/65. Heading B3F. In a cooled continuous casting mould having a rectilinear internal cross-section for forming a casting, thermal insulating zones which are spaced away from the internal shaping surface of the mould cavity are provided in the region of the corners 6 of the mould cavity to retard the dissipation of heat at the corners during casting, the zones extending longitudinally parallel to the axis of the mould. The zones are constituted by longitudinal bores 7 situated at the corners of the mould and which convey no cooling fluid. In addition tapering slots 10 may be machined in the bores to increase the thermal insulating effect progressively downwardly in the direction of solidification of the cast. Normal cooling of the mould is provided by the passage of coolant through bores 4 in which restrictor members 5 are located to limit the quantity of coolant flowing. In an alternative embodiment in which the mould construction is in the form of an inner product shaping wall and an outer wall forming a cooling jacket, thermal insulating coatings may be applied to those parts of the internal periphery of the shaping wall within the cooling jacket in the region of the corners.
