Abstract

1,109,399. Continuous casting. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. 13 Oct., 1965 [20 Oct., 1964], No. 43438/65. Heading B3F. An open-ended continuous-casting mould, incorporating passageways 11 for flow of cooling fluid, has inserts 25, of ductile metal such as gold, silver or platinum or alloys thereof, in the surfaces defining the mould cavity, to relieve thermal stresses. The surface 26 of an insert may be inwardly curved when cold. The mould walls may be rolled, forged or machined. The inserts may be ductile strip in grooves (21), Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), extending parallel to the axis of the mould cavity. There may be extra, filled grooves (23) where the mould is hottest and others (24) transverse to the axis. The inserts 25 may be only or additionally at the corners. The mould may be of copper or brass, it may consist of thin liners supported by massive steel members as in Specification 800,981.
