Abstract
1434960 Continuous casting VSES ORDENA LENINA NI I PROEKT KONSTRUKT INST METTALLURGICHE MASCHINOSTRO and TSENTRALNY NI INST CHERNOI METALLURGI IM IP BARDINA 23 Oct 1973 49383/73 Heading B3F A hollow body is cast continuously by the use of a mandrel in a mould both of which have coolant passages, the coolant flowing through the mandrel passages at a constant rate, and the difference between the temperatures at the coolant inlet and outlet of the mandrel is measured and the rate of withdrawal of the casting is controlled to maintain the temperature difference within the range 1-5‹ C. and if the difference rises by more than 5‹ C. the withdrawal rate is reduced until the difference falls to within the 1-5‹ C. range and the withdrawal rate increased. Detectors in the inlet and outlet pipes indicate the temperature difference continuously. An increase of 5‹ C. difference is said to indicate a break out of molten metal on to the mandrel surface. If there is not a return to the specified range of temperature, the reduction of withdrawal rate may be continued until the casting is stopped.
