Abstract
1409947 Automatic control of temperature CONCAST AG 17 April 1973 [18 April 1972] 18496/73 Heading G3R [Also in Division B3] In an arrangement for controlling the withdrawal of heat during the continuous casting of metals in mould 1 (Fig.1) having cooling regions 7, 8, 9, 10 through which cooling fluid is passed, in order to ensure uniform contact of the surface or skin of metal being cast with the mould walls, instruments 14, 15 connected respectively across the cooling fluid (water) inflow and outflow conduits 12 for the narrow walls 4, 5, measure the quantity of heat withdrawn per unit time as a measure of the degree of contact between the metal skin and walls. The measured values are compared with respective desired reference values thereof in a comparator 22 of a regulator 20. The reference values are delivered by a device 23 which receives momentary reference values from the computer 30. The resulting difference value is applied via a function generator 21 to adjust the [cooling fluid] through flow-rate of fluid in the cooling chambers or regions 7, 8 of the wide walls 2, 3 by means of elements 16 to 19 until the heat withdrawal at cooling regions 9, 10 of walls 4, 5 equals the respective reference values. The computer 30 stores the said measured values as a function of the throughflow quantity of coolant and determines the attained maximum value of heat withdrawal per unit quantity of coolant throughflow. This max value is then fed to the regulator to serve;as a new reference value. Alternatively measurement may be effected at the wide sides and control of heat withdrawal effected at the narrow sides. There may be more than two cooling regions or chambers per side in which case the regions of a controlled side may be controlled successively starting from the measuring side. The narrow sides converge toward the mould base.
