SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,888, dated January 22, 1895.
Application filed July 9, 1894.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, JOHN MATHEUS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chills; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to prevent formation of soft spots in such castings as are hardened by running water through a hollow chill; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts whereby water may be run into the chill through a plurality of inlets, diverted in opposite directions from each inlet and discharged through a plurality of outlets; as hereinafter more fully set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings: Figurel represents a transverse section on line 1-l of the succeeding figure and illustrates a car-wheel chill embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 represents a plan View of the chill partly in horizontal section.
Referring by letter to the drawings A represents a car wheel chill of ordinary construction, except that the same has a vertical outer wall thereof provided with two lateral inlet nipples B diametrically opposite each other and two lateral nozzles C also diametrically opposite each other intermediate of the nipples, the latter and the nozzles being so constructed as to engage with hose-pipe couplings D of any suitable pattern. Within the hollow portion of the chill another vertical wall is provided with preferably triangular projections E opposite the nipples and these projections divert the inflow of water thereby causing the same to' travel in opposite directions toward the nozzles, said water being supplied to both nipples through branches F of a common hose G or other suitable conveyers for water under pressure.
The hose H joined to each of the nozzles conveys the waste water to any convenient point. Y
As is usual in the art, the chill is made hot,
by steam admitted and discharged through the hose connections to thus provide against Serial No. 516,981. (No model.)
fracture of said chill when the metal is poured, and afterthis heating the water is turned on during the pouring operation.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the water entering each nipple is divided into two currents flowing in opposite directions to the nozzles, and there being a plurality of nipples and nozzles the travel of any current of said water within the chill is quite limited, whereby I am enabled to keep said currents at a comparatively low temperature and thus prevent conversion of the aforesaid water into steam, such conversion in ordinary chills being productive of soft spots in the casting.
It is obvious that the structural details herein set forth may be somewhat varied without departure from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hollow chill having a vertical outer wall provided witha plurality of lateral nipples for connection with a water-supply system, a plurality of lateral nozzles leading from said wall intermediate of the nipples, and cu rrent-diverting projections on an inner vertical wall of the chill opposite said nipples, substantially as set forth.
2. A hollow chill having a vertical outer wall provided with a plurality of lateral inlets for water under pressure, a plurality of lateral outlets in said wall intermediate of the inlets, and triangular current diverting projections on a verticalinner wall of the chill opposite said inlets, substantially as set forth.
3. A hollow chill having a vertical outer wall provided with a plurality of lateral inlets for water under pressure,-a plurality of lateral outlets in said wall intermediate of the inlets, and current diverting projections on a vertical inner wall of the chill opposite said inlets, substantially as set forth.
