Abstract
1285319 Casting moulds and processes; mould jackets UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP 1 July 1971 [14 Aug 1970] 30796/71 Heading B3F [Also in Division B5] Single crystal turbine blades are cast in a mould assembly comprising a number of articleforming moulds 2 (Fig. 2) in an annular jacket 22, 24. The mould assembly is made by providing a wax-pattern of a turbine blade 4 having at the lower end a helical passage 12 and cavity pattern 14, and at the upper end a runner pattern 10. Several such patterns are invested and the thereby formed article moulds are arranged in a ring with the turbine blade aerofoil leading edge of one mould adjacent the turbine blade aerofoil trailing edge of the next mould. Between the article moulds are spaces which are filled with wax 20. For each piece of wax 20, runner patterns 26, 28 are provided. At the top of the article moulds is placed a wax disc pattern 18 which will form a common sprue and which will interconnect runner patterns 26 and 10. The pattern assembly so-formed is reinvested to form a double walled mould assembly comprising article moulds interspaced by cavities and arranged in an annulus 22, 24. The wax patterns are melted out, and the mould assembly fired and placed within a furnace on a chill plate 30 so that cavities 14 and runners 28 are open to the chill plate. The mould assembly is preheated to above the melting temperature of an alloy to be cast therein. Alloy is poured and fills both the article moulds and cavities therebetween. Solidification commences from the chill plate upwardly in both runners 28 and cavities 14. The helix 12 selects a single crystal article to grow into the article moulds whilst columnar growth continues into the cavity. Heat is removed from the article moulds not only from the helix 12 but also from the cavities thereby increasing the rate of solidification of the single crystal turbine blades. In an alternative embodiment, the turbine blade faces of adjacent moulds are arranged opposing one another in the mould assembly.
