Abstract

1,194,224. Continuous casting. ALUMINIUM CO. OF AMERICA. 5 June, 1967, No. 25919/67. Heading B3F. In the continuous casting of aluminium or magnesium or alloys thereof, in a mould 10, the formation of deep laps 108 in the bottom and side surfaces of the casting 40 are avoided by providing an insulative plate 18 having a diverging opening 20 between a reservoir 8 of molten metal and the mould 10, the edge of the opening 20 on the mould side extending 1/64-1/8 inch inwardly of the inside mould surface at least at the lower portion of the opening, a substantial component of the flow of the molten metal being parallel to the axis of the mould. There may be a metallic gasket 32. The mould 10 (of aluminium, copper, or alloys thereof) may have a water chamber 16, with channels 50 forming a water curtain 52, or the mould may be chilled by water sprays. There are lubricant channels 58, 34 and radial grooves 33. The casting 40 is withdrawn by rollers 54.
