Abstract

1,022,499. Continuous casting-machines. ALUMINUM CO. OF AMERICA. June 4, 1964 [June 6, 1963], No. 23289/64. Heading B3F. In a method of continuous casting in a horizontal mould, all the metal enters the mould to the lower half section thereof through a narrow gate 20, Fig. 2 (not shown), which is close to but spaced from the inner wall of the mould and is in general conformity with the inner mould wall. The gate 20 may be segmented, Fig. 6 (not shown), and rectangularly or polygonally shaped for casting square or polygonally sectioned ingots respectively. The mould coolant is directed on to the issuing casting through an opening 50, Fig. 1 (not shown), whose size is adjusted by a plate 48. Lubricant is fed via channels 58, 34 to radial grooves distributed around the periphery of the mould head under a gasket 32, which also serves to initiate freezing of the metal. The mould may be aluminium or copper, or alloys thereof.
