Abstract

1,190,059. Continuous casting. ALUMINUM CO. OF AMERICA. 24 Aug., 1967 [1 Sept., 1966], No. 39086/67. Heading B3F. Casting rate and ingot quality of Al or Al alloy is said to be improved by a heat-insulated displacer 68 in an open-ended chill mould 10, e.g. inserted after continuous casting has been started. In the case of the vertical mould shown, continuous casting is started by lowering a mould closure plate (102). The drum- or box-shaped displacer is lowered by a rack 46 and pinion 42 rotated by a handle (50) and shortens the molten core. Water is directed from a pipe 98 on to both the (graphite or aluminium) mould 10 and the casting 100. The mould is topped by a box or ring 14 comprising fire-brick or asbestos-silica insulation (like that 86 of the hollow and uncooled displacer 68), possibly in compressed sections 16, in a steel shell 18 secured to a flange 12 on the mould. Melt enters the insulated mould top 14 from one or more troughs 96. The insulated displacer 68 is withdrawn from the mould 10, into the top 14 or above, before casting is started. To determine thermal conditions, thermocouples (94) are mounted in the displacer 68.
