Abstract
A method of producing light metal ingots by the direct cooling casting process, in which molten metal is introduced into one end of an open-ended mold and a solidified ingot is removed from the opposite end of the mold, applying a fluid coolant directly to the solidified surface of the ingot emerging from the mold, where in the course of ingot formation, in one step the ingot is removed from the mold at a rate less than the rate of crack propagation (as defined herein memory) for a sufficient distance to develop a center free of cracks in the ingot that comes out, then increasing the speed of extraction of the ingot to a speed greater than the speed of propagation of cracks and less than the speed of initiation of cracks (as defined herein).
