Abstract
A process for the production of metal ingots, particularly aluminum, by means of the direct casting process by direct sudden cooling in which coolant is applied to the external surface of an ingot when it leaves an open-ended mold, characterized in that A first zone extending from the bottom of the mold to a level adjacent to the bottom of the molten metal mass within the ingot, coolant is applied to the ingot such that heat is removed at a relatively slow rate (but maintaining a solid envelope on the outer surface of the ingot), so that the solidified metal surrounding the lower end of the molten metal mass is at a relatively high temperature, while in a second zone extending downward from said level it is applied more ingot coolant such that heat is removed at a relatively high speed to cause cooling rapid contraction and contraction of the solidified metal in the peripheral region surrounding the base of the molten metal mass, in which the metal is moving from the liquid to the solid state in the ingot core.
