Abstract
1,056,068. Casting composite articles. HIGH DUTY ALLOYS Ltd., and CHUBB & SONS LOCK & SAFE CO. Ltd. Nov. 19, 1963 [Nov. 20, 1962], No. 43860/62. Heading B3F. A method for the production of hollow lined articles comprises positioning in a die a metallic, ceramic or concrete core which is to serve as a liner and introducing molten metal at a temperature less than the melting point of the core; the core being open at one end and positioned in the die with the open end downwards and abutting against a surface of the die so as to prevent molten metal flowing into the interior of the core. A mild steel liner 14 for a safe is positioned on a water-cooled support 13 in a die 10 with movable walls heated to a temperature of 300-400‹ C. Aluminium or aluminium alloy is poured at 750-800‹ C., the casting height being determined by an overflow orifice 26. The cooled composite casting is then ejected, after opening thedie, by an ejector 16 operated through a rack and pinion by a handle 20. Pieces of metal or non-metal of melting point higher than the cast metal may fill the die cavity before pouring the aluminium or aluminium alloy then being poured at a temperature about 1000‹ C. to rapidly percolate the interstices.
