Abstract
1,127,708. Moulds. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 21 March, 1966 [10 June, 1965], No. 12264/66. Heading B3F. A mould assembly 10 for vacuum casting a plurality of metal parts comprises separable reusable members 12 disposed in verticallystocked relationship, adjacent members having recesses 14 formed therein which co-operate when assembled to define mould cavities 16 corresponding to the shape of the parts to be cast. The members 12 are held in the assembled position within a lower cylindrical mould portion 25 by a top member wihch is formed integrally with a molten metal reservoir 22 and which threadably engages at 26 the lower portion of the mould body. In operation the mould cavities are evacuated and a solid metal charge placed in the reservoir is melted by induction means 32, the molten metal running through gates 20 in all but the bottom mould part to fill the mould cavities 16. The gates 20 are necked at 40 to form a point of weakness between the finished casting whereat separation of the casting and the mould parts is effected by breaking. Alternative forms of mould member 12 are described, Fig. 4 (not shown), wherein the mould members are formed as symmetrical discs separated by spacerrings ( 12a ). To effect evacuation of the mould, the whole assembly is enclosed in a chamber which is evacuated. Cooling of the mould and castings therein is effected by cooling the mould bottom 27 so as to produce an upward and axial cooling effect. The mould parts are made from graphite.
