Abstract

1,130,592. Continuous casting. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. 12 April, 1967 [13 April, 1966], No. 16183/66. Heading B3F. In order to shut down a continuous casting plant when molten metal breaks through the strand shell, a container 7, 8 (spring-urged upwardly in a sliding fit on the bottom end of the graphite mould 4 to close electric control contacts 11, 12) is drawn downwardly by the cast strand 6 if molten metal breaks out into the cavity 5 between the container and strand. The break-out metal solidifies in the cavity 5 to lock the container to the descending strand. The steel-encased, refractory container may be of split construction to facilitate sawing off of the cast material before recommencing casting.
