Abstract

1411176 Electroslag remelting MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO KK 16 Feb 1973 [1 March 1972] 7872/73 Heading H5H [Also in Division B3] Flux, in an electroslag remelting process, is melted by passage of electric current through the flux 38 in a mould M, between non-consumable electrodes 35 connected to metallic electrodes 18 to be melted in the process. The mould M consists of a core 20 and an outer part 21 with a parallel walled part into which extends initially a start piece 10. Six metal electrodes 18 are symmetrically mounted on a rotatable disc 15 and have non consumable carbon electrodes 35, initially, releasably, attached. Start piece 10 is fixed to table 9, and mould M and flux hoppers 33, 33<1> are mounted on threaded spindles 24, 25, 25<1> for vertical movement as necessary in the process to permit continuous casting of a tube. Three phase electric current is supplied from source 11 via shoes 19. The carbon electrodes are inserted into the moulds either before or after powdered flux. After the flux has begun to melt, disc 15 is rotated to speed melting. After the flux has melted, the electrodes are withdrawn, the carbon electrodes 35 taken off, the metal electrodes 18 inserted in the molten flux, the current restarted and disc 15 is rotated. Additional flux is added as necessary. The flux may contain calcium fluoride. More than a single carbon electrode may be attached to each metal electrode.
