Abstract
1454911 Electroslag refining CENTRO SPERIMENTALE METALLURGICO SpA 29 Nov 1973 [6 Dec 1972] 55369/73 Heading B3F [Also in Division H5] An electroslag remelting process comprises introducing a hollow consumable electrode 2 having a closed bottom 3 into the slag, partly filling the electrode with powdered or granulated metal 5, covering the metal with an inert gas, passing an electric current between electrode and mould to melt the bottom of the electrode and sinter a layer of metal 7 adjacent the bottom that is sufficiently thick to support the weight of metal above, powdered or granulated metal being added as the electrode and contents melt. The electrode is fed downwards at 1-10 cm. per minute. Powdered metal is fed through a duct 8 as required, inert gas through duct 9. Additional sections 2 are welded on as necessary. Current used may be A.C. or D.C. at 20-100 V. and 5,000-60,000 A. One to four such electrodes may be used, the diameter of the electrode(s) lying between 20 and 90 % of the ingot to be produced.
