Abstract
1349099 Casting apparatus ROLLS-ROYCE (1971) Ltd 28 Nov 1972 [4 Dec 1971] 56395/71 Heading B3F A casting apparatus comprises first 10, second 11 and third 12 adjacent chambers each of which may be sealed and evacuated, valves 13 and 14 separating the chambers from one another, means in the first chamber for melting a charge of metal and discharging it through the valve 13 into the second chamber, a furnace 32 in said second chamber for heating a mould 33, and a movable support able to carry a chill 34 and a mould between said second and third chambers. In use, a crucible 28 containing a metal charge 29 is located within an induction coil 23 in the chamber 10, a flange 30 secured to the top of the crucible being pressed into sealing engagement with the upper wall 32 of the chamber. The chamber is then evacuated, the valve 13 opened and the charge 29 melted and allowed to flow into a mould 33 located within the furnace 32 in the second chamber 11. The valve 13 is now closed and the mould 33 and chill 34 lowered into the chamber 12 at a rate such as to bring about directional solidification of the molten metal. This lowering movement is brought about by a ram 44 having a plate 45 attached thereto, the plate engaging a bush 46 fixed to a spindle 35 supporting the mould. When the mould is fully within the chamber 12, the valve 14 is closed, the ram 31 actuated to raise the crucible 28 out of the chamber 10, and a spindle 40 rotated to replace the crucible 28 and chamber 12 with a new crucible 54 and chamber 57. All the chambers may be water cooled.
