Abstract

849,563. Vacuum melting furnaces. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 5, 1958 [Sept. 12, 1957], No. 28834/57. Class 51 (2). A vacuum melting furnace comprises an evacuable container 1 with an evacuable charging chamber 2 and an evacuable melting chamber 5 opening into it and extending through its roof, and transfer apparatus for moving a crucible 7 and mould assembly 22 between. the two chambers, said apparatus being adapted to form a gas-tight seal with the respective openings 4 and 14 of each chamber. The transfer apparatus comprises pots 6a, 6b mounted symmetrically on a spindle 8 which is moved vertically by a piston 9 in a pressure cylinder 10 and is rotated by a worm drive 16. The pots are sealed against the chambers by flanges 11 pressed by springs 20. The crucible is heated by an induction coil 23. A pot can thus be charged and discharged through the chamber 2 without destroying the vacuum in the container and the melting chamber.
