Abstract

827,770. Casting-machines. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. March 25, 1958 [March 26, 1957], No. 9929/57. Class 83 (1). [Also in Group XI] An induction-furnace comprises a melting- crucible contained within an evacuable chamber, and movable from a melting-zone to a casting position within the chamber, high-frequency heating means outside the evacuable chamber for said melting zone, and facilities for tilting the crucible when in the casting position. As shown, a furnace comprises an evacuable chamber 1 with an upper end-plate 3, on which is mounted a ceramic tube 6 embraced by a H.F. induction coil 7. A melting-crucible 12, supported on a vertically-movable tube 13, is movable from a melting position in the tube 6 to a casting position in the chamber 1, in which latter position the crucible is supported in a tiltable cradle 14 adjacent a mould 15 carried by a traversable table 16. A hand wheel 50 and associated mechanism 32 control the vertical movement of the tube 13, a hand wheel 64 (Fig. 3, not shown), controls the tilting of the cradle 14, and a hand wheel 88 controls the transverse movement of the table 16. The crucible is charged through a sealable opening 103 in a headbox 8, and the solidified cast-charge is removed through an access port 90 in the chamber 1.
